Energy Masters Courses at Department of Engineering

Nuclear Energy has a strong practical element allied to its engineering and scientific foundations. The course provides for this practical element by:

  • Visits are a key part of our course.  We take the whole of the cohort to Sizewell B, Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, Hinkley Point C, Westinghouse Springfields, Department of Nuclear Medicine at Addenbrooke's Hospital and a Research Reactor overseas.
  • Supplementing the teaching from University staff by leading practitioners each with experience of industry and national laboratories including: UKAEA and NNL.
  • Distinguished lectures/panel sessions and seminars from external speakers from industry and Government;
  • Experiments on a research reactor;
  • Long project involving either an industrial partner or national laboratory with a (optional) period working with their teams.

The style and form of the taught modules is participative and students work closely with their lecturers. In addition, the course has the features:

  • Ability to tailor the programme to student needs and career interests by selecting elective courses within a range relevant to nuclear energy;
  • A choice of a PhD stream for suitable research candidates;
  • Regular seminar discussion on nuclear energy exploring themes that provide the opportunity for all to share their views on important topics. Planned topics include: technology challenges of climate change, nuclear licensing in 21st century, financing of British Energy investment and privatisation, delivering on the decommissioning challenge, operating excellence around the world;
  • Collaboration with other courses including participating in teaching and seminars (through electives);
  • Opportunity to work with industry partner or national laboratory on their project
  • Opportunity to chat to Industry Club Members specifically about careers opportunities

We are proud of our Energy Institute accreditation.  The Energy Institute has strong links with The Institute of Mechanical Engineers, The Institute of Chemical Engineers and The Institute of Engineering and Technology.
