Applications must be submitted through the Postgraduate Admissions website https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegmpmne until the end of June each year. However, if you are applying for scholarship funding it is recommended that you apply early.
Scholarship Funding
Some of the biggest companies and organisations in the nuclear industry are lending their support to the new MPhil in Nuclear Energy. They recognise the importance of attracting the best students to the nuclear industry at the start of a major programme of UK investment.
Therefore, it has been decided to offer a small number of competitive Scholarships. These will be valued up to 7,000GBP and will assist the most able UK students with the costs of taking the course and they will be invited to apply for a Scholarship.
Information on funding and funding deadlines for the academic year is available from here.
The Application Process
Following interview and consideration, a recommendation to the Board of Graduate Studies is made that you are offered a place on the programme:
- MPhil in Nuclear Energy
The formal offer will be made by the Postgraduate Admissions Office specifying the requirements that you will have to demonstrate to turn the conditional offer into a final offer. In general these involve:
- Academic criterion, for those completing their current undergraduate or in some cases post graduate studies – a degree classification, percentage mark or GPA;
- Show how you will meet the fees and costs of the programme;
- For overseas and EU students who have not been taught wholly in English at least for the last three years - the English Language Test Score to be achieved;
For non-EU students, you will need to apply for an ATAS certificate to obtain your study visa – even though the ATAS site says that taught masters do not require ATAS, the research project element means that an ATAS certificate will be needed to apply for your visa.
Application to ATAS can be done only when your offer from the University is unconditional. It can be done on line at: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/what-we-do/services-we-deliver/atas/apply-online/
In addition, the Graduate Admissions Office will find you a Cambridge College, either your original choice or another.
In August or September, information will be provided about the course, including some initial reading lists. Additionally, your College and the Department of Engineering will provide joining instructions so that you are settled into the College before term started and you know what to do to register for the course at the Department of Engineering.
Therefore the process is in four phases:
1. You receive a conditional offer;
2. When you have satisfied the conditions you will receive an unconditional offer;
3. If non-EU apply for ATAS certificate and then a study visa;
4. Joining information.
If you are having difficulties with the process at any stage, please contact us and we will try to help, remembering that it is the Postgraduate Admissions Office that has to be satisfied on your eligibility etc.
