Energy Masters Courses at Department of Engineering

Sizewell B

Visiting Sizewell B was a great opportunity to see how an operational nuclear reactor works, not just the power generating process but all of the other measures that are taken by EDF to ensure that the plant runs safely as well as efficiently. Seeing the emphasis that the company has on the safety procedures on-site at all times highlighted how important making sure that the workers, the public and environment are as safe as they can possibly be.

I found seeing the turbines, even though they weren’t being used at the time, to be the most interesting part of the visit as it was fascinating to see the mechanisms that are actually used to generate the electricity from the power plant.

The staff were also very knowledgeable about the facility and were able to answer the vast majority of questions that were being asked and this allowed me to gain a real insight into the day-to-day operation of the power plant.

The entire visit was worthwhile and I would thoroughly recommend anyone to go and visit the Sizewell B site.
